When I was but a
tiny pup, just learning of the world
My spirit knew of gentleness I was a happy girl.
I learned the leash, and wished that I could wander free
But humans watched my safety, first and so they guarded me.
And then I learned of harnesses. Commands of 'left' and 'right'
I learned to walk most carefully to guide one without sight.
Then, soon, I met my human friend and formed a love so strong
That every time she said 'let's go!' my heart leapt up in song.
And while we went 'most everywhere, sometimes, still I yearned
To run as free as the birds above before that leash I'd earned.
Then came the day when I was old, and illness haunted me
How could I tell my human, dear that I wanted to be free?
Somehow, she knew, and did her best released me from my pain,
I stand upon the rainbow span, and want my leash again!
I wear no harness, now, or leash, and guide work, I know not.
I'm free to go, but still I stand rooted to this spot.
No greater love, a human has than to give a dog her ending.
To keep that promise, surely made at the moment of befriending!
She kept her vow, and I kept mine,
Two hearts joined as one, we shall finish on that Rainbow Bridge
what in life we had begun.
And when my human comes, at last I shall dance and leap for glee!
And we won't need the harness, now, for we shall BOTH be free!
